How to turn off the computer remotely

How to turn off the computer remotely

Retarded as hardened as you are, you left the house in a hurry leaving for the umpteenth time the computer turned on. You will stay away all day and before evening nobody can go to your room to turn it off. And now who does your parents hear them paying electricity bills every month? Next time, make a reminder on your phone! Come on, I’m joking and even trying to play down the situation a bit, do not worry, these things happen! In this case, however, you can make the best of a bad game, learning a new technological procedure that will allow you to turn off the computer remotely.

How do you say? I read you in thought and this is exactly what you just typed on Google? Modestly I am a magician, I must admit it. Seriously, what you have in front of you is a rather common request and you are not the first to ask me how to turn off the computer at a distance. It is therefore just to face a common difficulty that I decided to make this tutorial. Before you can worry about it, the answer to your implicit question is “no, it’s not difficult to do it and you do not need technical skills”.

During this guide I will explain how to do the procedure in question in a very simple, fast and immediate, illustrating the steps you will need to perform step by step: there is no margin for error. How do you say? Can not wait to get started and you’re really looking forward? All right, all right, all right, you’re right, it’s time to go straight to the action. Enough talk, now I leave you to the tutorial, but first I wish you, as usual, a good read and a good “work”.

How to turn off the computer remotely

There are different ways to turn off a computer remotely. For example, you can juggle the command prompt to configure a remote shutdown, or you can simply rely on much easier-to-use solutions such as remote desktop access programs.

In the first case, you usually have to use a combination of strings based on the generic shutdown command (combined with the -i and -m tag, which I talked about in this guide ), you will then need to activate the remote registry service and you will also need to know your local IP address.

This procedure, however, can be really cumbersome and not of immediate use, from the moment it requires different specific knowledge that could be difficult to explain in a simple guide like this you are reading.

In addition, you may also encounter some configuration problems related to the need to manually activate necessary modules that are disabled on your system.

There is, therefore, no valid procedure for all that I can explain to you, there are so many variables that should be taken into account. In any case, do not worry, this does not mean at all that I will leave you empty-handed. I have in fact several other alternatives in store for you.

What I recommend using, in the course of this tutorial, is a remote desktop sharing software. Performing a remote shutdown procedure of the computer, using a software of this type, is definitely easier to use.

In addition to being a solution for everyone (and therefore not only for those who have specific technical knowledge with the use of computers), it gives you the ability to remotely turn off a computer without any kind of hitch.

In the next lines, therefore, I will talk about some software that you can use to access the remote desktop of a PC and set a shutdown through a simple procedure as well as immediate.

TeamViewer

One of the remote sharing software that you can use to shut down your computer remotely is TeamViewer. This software is distributed free for private use (and therefore not commercial) on computers with Windows operating system, MacOS, and Linux, and on mobile devices, with Android, iOS, Windows 10 Mobile and BlackBerry.

You can then download the version that best suits your needs, reaching the official TeamViewer website. In case you were interested in using this software for your company, then please note that you will need to purchase a user license.

Having clarified this passage, we can move on: I will specifically talk about the installation of this software for devices with Windows operating system.

However, the procedure for accessing a remote Windows computer is very similar to the one you would do on other systems. You do not have to worry about anything; follow the procedures I am going to indicate to you carefully.

Once you have chosen the version to download based on the operating system you are using (in this case Windows), click on the Download TeamViewer button to download the installation file.

Once the file is opened, the installation procedure will start. Please note that this software must be downloaded and installed on both devices: both on the one to be turned off remotely, and on the one from which you will carry out the shutdown command.

Meanwhile, let’s start talking about the procedure to be followed on the computer to be switched off remotely.

On this computer, install the software by checking the Install box to later check this computer remotely. Also, click on the item For private/non-commercial purposes, if you are using the free version of the software.

Then click on the Accept button and then on Yes, in the user account’s control window. Once the installation procedure is finished, start TeamViewer, in order to see the main interface of the program.

Now, in the left section of the program, display the ID and Password that are indicated under the heading Allow remote control. This information is what you need to access your computer.

But before proceeding, I suggest you set a personal password, like the one you see on the screen is generated randomly every time you open the software.

Then click with the right mouse button on ‘ An arrow icon next to the password and click Set personal password. Follow the on-screen procedure to set a password.

On your computer on which you will perform the shutdown command, perform the same installation procedure that you followed previously, making sure to mark as an option simply the item Install.

Also in this case, when opening the program you will see an ID and a password, but ignore them. What interests you is to access the computer to be turned off remotely.

Then view the Check Remote Computer section and enter the ID you have previously marked. Then click on Connect and enter the password that you had previously set. Then click Login to start the connection to the remote desktop.

I remind you that a desktop sharing, also aimed at remote shutdown of a PC, requires that both computers have an active Internet connection.

In addition, the computer on which you want to run the shutdown command must have TeamViewer running in the background.

In the program window, you will see the remote desktop, which you can turn off at any time, following the classic procedure of switching off your operating system. When you shut down, the remote connection will automatically stop.

Chrome Remote Desktop

Another useful application that can help you remotely shut down in an extremely simple and immediate way is Chrome Remote Desktop.

This free tool is integrated directly into the Google Chrome browser and can, therefore, be compatible with all operating systems with this popular browser (Windows, MacOS, and Linux).

Being, therefore, an integrated tool to Google Chrome, it is necessary this is installed on both computers. In addition, you will need a Google account, without which you will not be able to start configuring the remote desktop.

If you do not know how to proceed to create a Google account, read my guide dedicated to the topic, in which I explain you step by step how to do.

You can also access a computer remotely via the app freely available on mobile devices with systems Android and iOS.

To download this tool, you will need to connect to the official web address of the service. Then click on the wording at the top Remote Access and click on the icon with a down arrow, to download the extension to Google Chrome.

You will see a message at the top on which you will have to click on Add extension. You will also download a package that will be installed on your computer to manage remote sharing.

Once the installation procedure has been carried out, you will be asked to assign a name to the computer currently in use on your Chrome browser. Then type a name and click on the Next button.

Then enter a PIN of at least 6 digits that you will need to log in. Then complete the procedure by clicking on the Start button and then on the Yes button.

The computer currently in use is then ready to receive remote access. To access it from another device, be it a mobile device or another PC, you will have to access the web address of the service, with your Google account, so as to view all the devices registered for remote access.

You will then have to click on the computer name and enter the PIN you set up. Then wait for the upload to have complete remote control on the computer.

To perform the shutdown, simply follow the usual procedure to shut down the operating system in use. Have you seen how easy it was?
