How can you resolve the problem of IP address conflict to run your internet smoothly?

Internet protocol or IP address conflicts take place when two or more than two devices in the same network end up being allocated the same IP address. The IP address is a unique identifier for the devices like computers and laptops which consists of a series of numbers, for instance, 192.168.8.4. One cannot have access to the internet without it. An error message or a warning message will display on your screen to let you know about the problem of IP address conflict. The devices which encounter such problem are unable to connect to the network resources and thus fail to perform any other network operations.

This problem can also arise because of the following mentioned reasons:

  • A computer is allocated an inactive IP address that falls into the DHCP range for the local area network, and the same address is designated to a computer by the DHCP server
  • The device is put into sleep mode, and when it turns on, it connected to some different network which has already allocated the same IP address of  another computer.
  • If you have various network adapters, there is every possibility that there will have an IP address conflict with itself.
  • If you have connected various wireless routers to your network and DHCP is permitted on more than one device.

To fix this error, you can try the following solutions:

Solution1:

  • Try to release and renew the IP address of your device using the command prompt. You need to click on Start and then type in CMD.
  • In the next step, you need to enter the below command to release your IP address:

ipconfig /release

You will get the several results for the above-typed command depending upon the number of adapters you have. For instance: For Ethernet ports, you will view the Ethernet adapter Ethernetx heading, and for wireless cards, you’ll see Wireless LAN Adapter Wi-Fi, etc.

But remember that if your device is set up with a static IP address, the operation will get failed as none of the adapters is permitted for this operation. In this case, you need to skip down to the Reconfigure Static IP Address section.

  • Once you have run this command, you also need to run the command to renew the IP address, that it will try to get from the DHCP server.
  • Wait for few seconds, you will see the results, and there should be an IP address listed next to IPv4 Address.

Solution 2: Reconfigure Static IP Address

If in case your device is using an IP address that is static in nature. This might create IP address conflict; you can try to change your IP address. To do so, you need to follow the steps:

  • Firstly, click on the control panel and go to the icons. Now, you need to click on the option of ”Network and Sharing Center” that you can find on the left-hand side.
  • In the next step, you need to click on the option of ”Change adapter settings.”
  • Now, make a right click on the option of ”Network Adapter” which is currently being used for the connection of internet and then select ”Properties” option.
  • In the next step, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then make a click on the Properties button. From there automatically obtain the IP address from a DHCP server.

If these two solutions don’t solve your problem the issue might be related to your router.

Solution 3: Wireless Routers

Another solution to resolve this matter is to restart your wireless router. Many times restarting your router fixes this issue. You should reboot your computer too after restarting the router. Also, in some cases, the DHCP server can fail and assign the same IP address to more than one computer. Under this situation, you should try to update your router firmware, so issues like this can crop up.
